On my birthday, I am sharing one of my favourite mantras from Japanese Shinto tradition. It is the same mantra that was chanted at the waterfall in the film “The Path”, but I learned it from a person of a different school so it might be slightly different.
Here is my translation of it, not to say that I am confident in my understanding of it- but it shall give you some idea.
Rokkon-Shohjoh
The supreme goddess that shines across the heaven says,
Humans are the divine beings under the heaven.
The heart that governs to have everything in peace
Is the root of the divine.
Do not hurt the divine of your heart.
Therefore,
See all the impurities with your eyes and not with your heart.
Hear all the impurities with your ears and not with your heart.
Smell all the impurities with your nose and not with your heart.
Speak all the impurities with your mouth and not with your heart.
Touch all the impurities with your body and not with your heart.
Think all the impurities with your mind and not with your inner spirit.
That is when it is pure and fresh.
All the principles are like the shadow and the form.
If the body is pure and heart is fresh, there is no impurity even for a second.
The words are not to be taken as they are.
Everything is in the way they are meant to be.
My body has therefore purity in six senses.
Because there is purity in six senses, the divine of the five organs are in peace.
Because the divine of the five organs are in peace, it has the same root as the divine of the heaven and earth.
Because it has the same root as the divine of the heaven and earth, it has the same form as the spirit of all beings.
Because it has the same form as the spirit of all beings, all the wishes cannot be unfulfilled.
